The label for Grumpy’s Boston Cream evolved with the influence of fairy tales, and the legal drama of a courtroom thriller. Andrew Schultz, Grumpy’s Brewhaus owner explains:
“The Grumpy logo was constructed by a graphic artist in Adelaide some 18 years ago. What I originally wanted was one of the seven dwarfs, holding a beer mug, so with a lot of patience, cutting and pasting and a photocopier, I came up with something I thought might be ok.
My graphic artist informed me it was good but Mr Disney would not be impressed by my efforts so she came up with the current logo. We tried to copyright the logo then Mr Bond’s copyright lawyers decided it was too similar to their label for Swan Strong Arm Bitter. It was nothing like it, the only similarity being both labels depicted a man holding a beer. The fact that they had knocked off the name Strong Arm didn’t seem to bother them!
They eventually gave up and Mr Grumpy has lived on since.”
