With Abstinence the beer style heavily influenced the name and label design. The best Belgian Dubbels are brewed by monks, so we were always going to have a monk as the centrepiece. That got us thinking about what it means to be a monk; When you’ve got five guys in a room talking about monks the first thing that’s going to come up is pretty obvious: abstaining from sex.

In a way, that ties in with a more general idea of abstinence that comes about at Easter. I don’t think anyone is abstaining from sex per se, but there’s definitely that feeling that you should probably hold back on the chocolate. That’s where the chocolate girls come in: a kind of multilayered representation of the abstinence concept. We decided to have Alex (Crowley) illustrate them in that over-the-top, Blaxploitation style, just to tone down the controversy (or tone it up, depending on how you look at it). There’s a few subversive elements there, so hopefully that carried through to the end customer.
